In this installment of the Lunar Chronicles we get to learn a little about Levana’s story. She is the Queen of Luna who is trying to take over Earth, but no one really knows why. No one knows why she is so cruel and glamour’s herself all the time. But, in this story, we learn the answers to those questions. And even though we don’t want to root for the bad guy, we can kind of understand her stance after reading this book.
If you haven’t read this book then you don’t want to finish reading this because there are a lot of spoilers.
Levana’s story starts out by explaining how her parents were murdered and her older sister becomes Queen. And not a very good one. She is more into partying and her “companions”. She later becomes pregnant and has her baby, but soon after she dies. This means that Levana’s niece will become Queen at the age of 13 and until then Levana fills that roll. Over time Levana becomes greedy and wants it all to herself and plots a way to kill her niece. I won’t give away why because then you won’t want to read the book.
All while this is happening Levana falls in love with a guard and is convinced he loves her because of small gifts he gives and that he is nice to her. His wife dies in child birth, Levana thinks this is a sign that they should be together. After a bit Levana uses her Lunar Gift and forces the guard to bed her and then marry her. They are married for 10 years (don’t quote me on that) before she kills him. Have to read the book to figure out why she did it and how, trust me, you don’t want me to give away that detail.
But what the biggest shocker is finding out why she glamour’s herself all the time. That piece I am not going to talk about because that is the foothold to why she is the way she is. Marissa Meyer does such a great job explaining our villain and her back story. I am truly impressed! Meyer’s continues to shower us in the wonderful stories that she tells and keeps getting us sucked into that world that you start to feel the way the characters feel.
I encourage you to read the Lunar Chronicles series. The next book is Winter. The final installment in the series. I am truly excited for this book but equally as sad that the series will be ending. So, stay tuned, this is going to be a wild ride!
